From the
department chairman |
Welcome to the ENBE News, Volume 8, Number 1.
Spring is upon us with all of its glorious color, warmer temperatures, and busy times. It is also a good time to pause and look over the last year to see what we have accomplished and to consider where we want to go. The budget cuts have affected us all, but the department has been fortunate in that our cuts were absorbed from vacant positions, and we did not have to lay off anyone. However, it also means we can not hire people. With 12 faculty members and about 160 undergraduates and 55 graduate students our faculty are spread thin. The college and campus both had to lay off people to meet their budget cuts during FY 2004. What will happen in the next fiscal year depends on the governor and the legislature. Many good things have happened over the last year. The awards noted in this and the last newsletter are only one sign of the outstanding caliber of our students and faculty. Our staff is excellent and enables the department to function effectively despite the limited number of faculty. The staff's contributions to making the department a friendly place for students, staff, and faculty and a great place to work can not be overstated. We thank all of our staff for their contributions and dedication to the department. Our enrollment continues to increase in the Biological Resources Engineering Program and has held steady in the Natural Resources Management Program. Our graduate enrollment is increasing and the qualifications of both the undergraduates and graduate students are growing. Our grant funding is up, due to the faculty's efforts to develop additional funding. As grant funds increase so does graduate student funding opportunities. We are able to provide funding for many of our graduate students but not all. We have placed two Ph.D. students in National Needs Fellowships, and we have several others supported by graduate school fellowships or assistantships from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Many of the graduate students are on research assistantships secured by the faculty as part of their research and extension grants. Our student body is diverse. Both our undergraduate and graduate programs are approximately 50 percent women and we have students from 10 or more countries in departmental programs. Departmental graduates are finding engineering jobs (for the ENBE graduates and other jobs for the NRMT graduates) in a variety of companies, government agencies, universities and non-profit organizations. As the number of graduates grows the diversity of job opportunities increases, primarily because Biological Resources Engineers are becoming more widely known and appreciated for their abilities. Our alumni also help by listing job opportunities in the department that their company or organization has open. I encourage our alumni to continue to keep us informed of job opportunities, internships, and other employment opportunities of which they are aware. University tuition has increased sharply over the last year, and is projected to increase more in the fall of 2004. Obviously this makes it more difficult for students to pay for their education. The department is doing all we can to help students, but we need your help. Scholarships are one way we can offset some of the increased costs. This year the department awarded $4,750 in scholarships. Thus, your contributions to the department scholarship fund will be most helpful to our students. In 2005 we will again undergo a visit from ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) for the next cycle of our engineering program accreditation. One of the requirements of ABET 2000 is that we show what types of jobs our graduates are obtaining both upon graduation, and later in their careers. Thus, I ask our alumni to keep us up to date on your current activities, awards, promotions, and positions. This is easy to do by filling out the form at the end of this newsletter and returning it to Teri Schuler. I appreciate the help alumni are giving us by keeping us up to date on their activities, providing ideas for capstone projects, contributions to the department, job listings and other help. I hope, as opportunity presents itself, you will stop by and say hello, send us a note about your activities, or just keep in touch. |

| ENBE 454 Design Projects |
Everyone always seems to be interested in the current design projects for ENBE 454, Biological Process Engineering. Are they easier or harder than the ones you had to face when you were taking the course? To satisfy your curiosity, here are four of the design projects assigned during 2002 and 2003. 1. Fluid Flow Design Problem - Spring 2002 Events of the past year have convinced the University administration that protection against bioterrorism must be assured. For this reason, we need the ventilation systems in the various laboratories of the Biological Resources Engineering Department to be modified to remove anthrax endospores should they be introduced into either the air surrounding the building or the air inside the labs. You are to provide means to do this while still assuring that the labs are adequately ventilated. To assist in this project, you may need to visit the facility control room where the ventilation systems are located, consult the architectural drawings, or investigate relevant air handling recommendations. (Do rooms 504, 513, 530, 532, 534). 2. Mass Transfer Design Problem - Spring 2002 Entremed is producing two vascularity-inhibiting proteins called Angiostatin and Endostatin for tumor inhibition. Both of these are produced by genetically modified yeast cells in bioreactor tanks. These tanks are maintained at 22-24oC, pH is maintained at 3-6, and methyl alcohol is used as a trigger to produce the proteins. Thirty to fifty percent of the mass of the medium is composed as cells; the other 50-70% is liquid containing the desired proteins. Sucrose octyl sulfate, when bound to the protein makes the protein more soluble. Soluble proteins are each about 20K Daltons in size. Cells are 3µm. The tank concentration of protein is 0.2-1 gr/L. The required concentration is 8 gr/L. Desired production rate of the concentrated protein is 100L/(5-6 hr). Design a membrane filtration system for this application. 3. Heat Transfer Design Problem - Spring 2003 Organogenesis produces thousands of synthetic skin grafts per month. These are made in Petri dishes filled with a liquid nutrient that stimulates skin growth by mimicking its natural environment. Dermal cells from infant foreskin tissue are first spread over a collagen matrix which is set in a shallow, round dish well-bathed in nutrient medium. The lower layer of skin incubates at 37oC for six days. The nutrient bath is changed every day. On the sixth day, epidermal cells are spread over the lower layer of skin and the Petri dishes are again incubated at 37oC. On the tenth day, the skin is lifted out of the culture bath so the top is exposed to air. For the next 10 days, the outer tough layer of skin, known as the stratum corneum, is developed. This entire process is performed by hand. The firm wants to introduce industrial-scale automation to increase its capacity from 50,000 skin grafts per year to 500,000 skin grafts per year. What is needed is a controlled environment in which the cell inoculation, nutrient exchange, and temperature control are performed as automatically as possible. Propose a system to:
The system must also be sterile and accessible to human monitors. 4. Mass Transfer Design Project - Spring 2003 Finding useful means to dispose of waste water biosolids can be a challenge. One proposed solution is to inject them into the ground, grow hay, and donate the hay to wildlife parks, animal rescue organizations, and therapeutic riding centers. To avoid costly transportation and handling of large volumes of water, the waste water - biosolids are to be concentrated using a membrane filtration system. For a waste treatment plant with 40 million liters of discharge per day,
